What’s In the Tracker, and When

You can use this tracker to look up how many people have voted in your county or district, with daily updates during early voting and more frequent updates on Election Day.

Now: Mail-in ballots, ballots that need fixing, turnout percentage, party affiliation, and age.

Starting October 16: In-person early votes and early voting sites, reported each morning for the prior day.

November 3: Precinct turnout and Election Day votes, with updates every 20 minutes after polls close.

Late November or December: Final turnout for every county, district, and precinct from official voter history.

If you voted by mail, you can look up your ballot (or sign up for updates at the state’s BallotTrax portal) to see if it had any issues you need to resolve.

How is the Turnout percentage calculated?

The Turnout Percentage includes active and inactive registered voters—the largest possible count of registered vorters, so we never overstate turnout. Inactive voters are eligible to vote, but will likely be asked to verify their address at the polls.

The voter file publishes weekly updates, so our denominators will update each week. During early voting, same-day registration is possible, so the true percentage of registered voters is a moving target.

We will stop updating the registered voters denominator after Election Day.

Why do you only include Party and Age?

For each layer of data, you can toggle between Party and Age. We do not include data about race. Race is a self-reported category, and about 10% of voters leave it blank—closer to 1 in 6 among those who have registered since 2020. That gap distorts the usefulness of that report.

Why don’t I see any candidate results?

This is a turnout tracker, not an election results tracker. For that, we recommend er.ncsbe.gov.

Why is my precinct missing?

To protect voter privacy, precincts with fewer than ten 10 votes are combined into a single line in their county’s table.

Why did some numbers change since yesterday?

As county boards of election process ballots, you may see changes to the data reported here. For example, a ballot that gets cured will be added to the data for the day on which it was received, not necessarily the day on which it was cured.

When are these numbers official?

The state deadline for certifying elections is November 24, although it could run as late as December if there are any complications to resolve. Our final turnout numbers come from the State Board’s official voter history, usually a few weeks after the election. When they’re in, the tracker will say “Final Turnout.”
